There are many reasons to import a car from Austria to Germany.  

Maybe you are thinking of buying a car in Austria and importing it to Germany or you want to buy a caravan in Austria because you have found it at a reasonable price.  

Maybe you want to import a car from Austria because you emigrated and want to return to Germany.

What documents do you need?

The first thing you need to know is that car purchases within the EU are tax-free.  

If you want to move from Austria to Germany and want to bring the vehicle yourself, we recommend that you go to the customs office at the German border to complete the formalities.   

If a company brings the vehicle for you, they will take care of the customs formalities.  

Your vehicle will be considered as relocation goods if you have had the vehicle for more than 6 months.  

For new or used vehicles, the important documents are:  

  • Valid ID  
  • Driving licence  
  • Invoice of purchase  
  • Vehicle documentation  
  • Workshop invoice (if visited)  
  • Certificate of Conformity  

The Certificate of Conformity is an essential document that will allow you to drive legally in Germany and Austria, and confirms that your vehicle complies with European road traffic regulations.   

If your vehicle is new, you will get this document together with the rest of the documentation.  

If your vehicle is second-hand, you will probably need a new Certificate of Conformity.
